I am a graduate of the University of West Florida with a B.A. degree in History-Public Service. I also attended Western Washington State College (recreation management) and University of Southern Mississippi (education). I case you are wondering, I started in my parents' home state of Washington, and then followed my girlfriend/fiancée/wife Janet to Mississippi and Florida.

I have attended the Disney Institute and completed their courses in Leadership Excellence and Selection, Training & Engagement. I am also a graduate and certified instructor for the Rotary International Leadership Institute.

While I was at Philmont and as a Scout executive I visited Brigham Young University (from 1996 to 2009) to share the Scouting profession and Philmont seasonal staff opportunities with students. While there I had the opportunity to be a guest instructor in not-for-profit management courses. I have also guest lectured at Kansas University in community leadership.

I completed the BSA National Executive Institute, People Management, the Advanced Management Seminar, Scout Executive’s Roundtable, Fiscal Management Certification (Basic and Advanced,) American Disabilities Act, Team Effectiveness, Sexual Harassment, Coaching Skills, and Rightful Discharge courses.

I have been an instructor for Professional Development Level I and III, District Operations Basic, Senior Leadership Essentials, and First Time Scout Executives’ Orientation.  Also, I was an instructor or director for National Camp Schools for Cub Scout day camp, Cub Scout resident camp, Boy Scout camp program and management, and high adventure. I have served on the Philmont Training Center faculty (1990-2014) and was a National Outdoor Seminar instructor (1993-2013).

Janet is a recipient of the Silver Beaver award, a past member of the National Executive Board of the American Heritage Girls, the BSA’s national membership committee, national Cub Scouting task forces, and the Philmont Training Center Faculty. She was the voice of the BSA's "CubCast" from 2012-2014.

We are the parents of three grown sons - Richard, Robert, and Brian - all of whom are married and are Eagle Scouts.

I have been a Church officer, Elder, and Deacon and a member of congregation’s personnel and capital campaign committees.

I am the author of The Other Side of the Road, the story of the Philmont Training Center published by the Philmont Staff Association in 2009.

My hobbies include writing, golf, photography, genealogy, computers, social networking, and Scouting.

I earned the Arrow of Light and am an Eagle Scout.  I have attended and staffed Wood Badge and am a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. I have been a unit volunteer on every level for our three Eagle Scout sons’ units including Cubmaster, den leader, assistant Scoutmaster, unit committee, and Crew Advisor. As a Scouter I have earned the Scouter’s Training, Scouter’s Key, International Scouter’s, BSA Speaker, Cub Scouter’s, Webelos Den Leader’s, Tiger Cub Leader, PTC Master’s Track, and God and Service awards.

I served on several National Jamboree Staffs: 1989 as a subcamp commissioner; in 1993, 2005, and 2010 as director of staff dining halls, and 2013 in national exhibits.  I have also served as a National Board Member and member of publications, membership, and capital campaign committees of the Philmont Staff Association.
